When officials in Montgomery County, MD, USA set out to update road design standards for county streets, they took a unique approach. Recognizing that a Complete Streets approach to road design was needed, and that street design has both a land use context and roadway function, county officials agreed upon a joint effort between the county's land use and master planning authority and the county's transportation agency. Pulling together planners from Montgomery Planning and engineers from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), the county re-envisioned its approach to street classification and design and in the process forged lasting bonds that will help the county to navigate the transition from a transportation system built primarily to convey motor vehicles at high speeds over long distances, to one that is focused on safety and multimodal travel. |
