The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established a wide range of programs aimed at improving the nation's infrastructure. Improving safety for all road users was a priority theme in BIL and led to the creation of the unique and important discretionary grant program called the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. With $5 billion in appropriated funds over the next 5 years, SS4A is focused on improving roadway safety and reducing serious injuries and fatalities for those that walk, bike, roll, and travel in a vehicle. The SS4A program supports the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg's National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS). The NRSS outlines the department's comprehensive approach to reversing the rise in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on the nation's highways, roads, and streets, emphasizing the department's commitment to safety through priority actions that target the most significant and urgent problems in roadway safety. The NRSS also calls upon external stakeholders to commit to actions that will augment the NRSS in making progress toward the vision of zero roadway fatalities. ITE is honored to be one of the "first movers" to commit to taking specific action in 2023 as part of the NRSS Allies in Action. ITE strongly supports the NRSS and is committed to working with our members to support the NRSS, and is a strong advocate for use of the Safe System Approach. |
