Now is the time for a fresh look at traffic safety strategies. Zero fatality programs made great strides since the early 2000s to reduce fatalities on our roadway networks, but results have plateaued, and now even reversed.1 The drive toward zero fatalities must be a public journey, and programs will see the most success n everyone plays a role to promote increased safety on roadways. With increased traffic fatalities, transportation safety leaders across the United States are taking a fresh look at their programs and using new data tools to: 1. Organize public resources for maximum effect 2. Apply systemic/proactive analyses of crash trends to find where systemic improvements can prevent severe crashes 3. Develop predictive models using machine learning to give a risk-adjusted, probabilistic view of traffic safety These strategies, relying both on data and lessons learned, have the potential to once again change the landscape and send traffic crash statistics back downward. |
