As communities increasingly recognize the value of streets as more than just conduits for motor vehicle traffic, the opportunity to reexamine national standards for the use of decorative crosswalks is present. Based on the case studies in this report, it is demonstrated that a balance between safety and aesthetics can be achieved through careful planning, community engagement, and the development of tools that enable the implementation of decorative crosswalks. The benefits are clear: by embracing creativity and incorporating artistic expression into the streetscape, cities can create unique and engaging environments that celebrate civic pride, foster community engagement, and enhance the overall quality of urban life. |
