Our study provides valuable insights into the factors influencing vehicle operating speed, particularly in relation to the presence of cyclists. The correlation between the presence of cyclists and vehicle operating speed suggests that increased bicycle traffic can influence vehicle speed. One of the effective ways of improving bicyclist safety can be speed reduction, as traveling at a lower speed increases the driver's yielding rate, widens the driver's field vision, and reduces the probability of bicyclist fatality by getting struck by a vehicle. Reducing vehicle speed becomes more critical on roadways with a higher posted speed limit since they usually have a higher number of lanes and higher operating speeds based on the results. Increasing drivers' awareness of the presence of bicyclists on roadways is another effective way of improving bicyclist safety. This could be leveraged by implementing strategies that increase the visibility of cyclists on the road, such as dedicated bike lanes, cyclist awareness campaigns, or improved signage. However, these potential counter-measures are just starting points. Each community has unique needs and characteristics, and any proposed measures should be tailored to the local context. Furthermore, these measures should be tested and evaluated to ensure their effectiveness. |
