ITE hosted Transportation Equity Listening Sessions in 2021, reaching hundreds of members across the breadth of the organization. Taking the time to listen and reflect upon the participants'perspectives provided unique insight into determining appropriate action by ITE. Those discussions returned themes related to general desire to incorporate equity in daily practice but also a lack of tools and examples. For instance, lack of engagement with community and users of the transportation system was a reoccurring issue. Other gaps included equity and demographic data, training, and knowledge of the social class, wealth, income, gender, etc. impacts on transportation access. Non-technical equity challenges included building empathy in the profession and challenging legacy viewpoints. These gaps are combined with technical challenges related to motor vehicle focus; traditional funding formulas; legacy policies, rules, and regulations; project time constraints; emerging technology; tolling; and congestion pricing. |
