ITE JOURNAL: Your career with Henrico County, VA, USA spanned more than 30 years before you retired as the deputy county manager for Community Operations. How did you see the transportation profession evolve during this time? What were some of the benefits of staying with the same agency for three decades?
TIM FOSTER: Throughout my 36-year career, one of the things that I have seen evolve is the thinking of transportation from a macro-level to a micro-level. When I was first starting out, we were very car-oriented. It seemed everything we did was based on getting motorized vehicles from point A to point B, without the thought of all users of the roadway. Now that we know we cannot continue to just widen roads to ease congestion, we are seeing more innovative ways to deal with transportation needs. Smart street options and other innovative ideas are becoming available and acceptable to many jurisdictions. Seeing the bicycle and pedestrian accommodation "revolution" has been a very satisfying bookend to my career. |
