ITE JOURNAL: Fostering growth in students and young professionals is clearly an issue near and dear to your heart. How did you come to work with these groups and see the impact they can have on the profession and an organization like ITE?
VELASQUEZ: I'll start off by telling a bit of my story, because I think it really does translate into how I've been able to engage with students and young professionals, a group I really see as the future of ITE. In the late 1990s, my university did not have an ITE Student Chapter in its engineering program, so I wasn't introduced to ITE until I was a young professional. My boss and mentor was really active in ITE, encouraging us to come the meetings and even submit abstracts. As a younger member, I realized how important it was to have a mentor guide me and show me the value of ITE through professional growth and instill that sense of community. |
