SRI International collaborated with the University of California at Berkeley and The Boeing Company to investigate lightweight ballistic protection of commercial aircraft from engine fragments. SRI's role was to perform large-scale impact tests of barriers made from multilayer high-strength fabric and to computationally simulate the tests with a finite element model. This document (which is part 2 of the report) describes the tests and the model and presents the findings and remaining issues. Part 1 of the report includes small-scale ballistic impact tests and computational simulation by the University of California at Berkeley. Part 3 contains Zylon (Registered trademark) yarn material tests conducted by The Boeing Company. |
