AS GLOBAL ECONOMIES WORK TO RECOVER from the impacts of the pandemic, freight markets are shifting into new territory. Supply and demand remain out of balance and e-commerce order volumes continue to increase, for example, and the cloud of uncertainty continues to hang overhead. While freight rates and capacity have normalized for some transportation modes, the persistent labor shortage, lack of drivers and capacity issues are still impacting both domestic and global markets. The normal "peak" cycle has also changed. Where companies know to plan for big events like back to school, the summer selling season and the holidays, U.S. e-commerce sales passed the $1 trillion mark in 2022, effectively creating a "year-round" peak selling season for many companies. |
