A proposal for developing a greenway with associated bikeways and trails between Charleston and Huntington, West Virginia emerged in the mid-1980's. In June, 2001, previous plans and proposals were reviewed, an inventory of all existing and planned trails within the planning corridor was prepared, potential trail connector routes were identified, public opinion about trails in the corridor was assessed, and a coalition of partners was created. Numerous planning meetings were scheduled with federal, state, and local government officials; planning agency representatives; bicycle and trail interest groups; and other interested individuals. Route options and possible connector routes between and among existing and planned trails, bikeways, parks, and other recreation areas were identified. A day-long workshop in which greenway partners participated was held in July, 2002. Partners expressed an interest in pursuing development of the greenway beyond completion of the preliminary plan. In an attempt to maintain interest in and focus on the project, a Charleston/Huntington/Kenova Greenway web page was established on the RTI web site. The preliminary plan for the greenway was submitted in September, 2002. |
