Since 1790 the U.S. Coast Guard has maintained an impressive high seas capability which, in reality, is at the core of the very essence of the organization. All Coast Guard roles-- Maritime Law Enforcement, Maritime Safety, National Defense, and Marine Environmental Protection--are performed in the Deepwater arena, which is defined as that area beyond the normal operating range of single-crewed shore based small boats, where either extended on scene presence, long transit distances, or forward deployment is required in order to perform the mission. The Coast Guard's outstanding performance in the Deepwater area stands in extremis, however, as almost all of our major assets which pursue these crucial missions are rapidly approaching the end of their service lives. |
