THE DECADES-LONG and ever-perplexing truck driver shortage-estimated in excess of 80,000 by the American Trucking Associations (ATA)-has eased somewhat, according to leading trucking executives. In recent interviews with Logistics Management, top truckload executives say that years of pay increases have paid dividends of better retention and recruitment of qualified drivers. "The market remains tough, and at Werner we continue to hold expectations high by only hiring quality drivers," said Derek Leathers, company chairman, president and CEO. "While this expectation often comes at a premium cost, we have an unwavering commitment to upholding these driver standards. Albeit still a challenging market, the pressure to recruit and retain quality drivers has abated somewhat." |
