ITE Journal: Tell us more about yourself. How did you get involved in transportation engineering? What are your professional goals? ASIF: The field of transportation engineering is not very mature in Pakistan. In fact, it was not until 2002 that a formal bachelor's degree in transportation engineering started being offered in Pakistan. The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (UET Lahore) is the only university in Pakistan that offers a bachelor's degree in transportation engineering. Master's degrees in the field are being offered by five additional universities in Pakistan. This does demonstrate the growing state of transportation engineering in Pakistan. Moreover, it was not until a few years back that professional organizations offered a job with the title of "Transportation Engineer" in Pakistan. Mostly civil engineers were hired to do the job of transportation engineers, and the lack of in-depth knowledge led to the use of conventional transportation-related problem solving. The lack of comprehensive knowledge of traffic engineering, highway engineering, pavement design, pedestrian management, and other areas in the industry meant little creativity or novelty in devising ways to manage the maneuverability of people. Pakistan, being a developing state, had limited resources to offer any research in the transportation engineering field. Therefore, the commencement of a separate bachelor's degree in transportation engineering was a huge milestone for Pakistan's transportation industry. |
