A before-after study revealed that the RDE treatment significantly improved the safety performance of HRGCs on urban major and minor arterials in Florida. The overall benefits drawn from the statistical comparisons (Table 3) are shown in Figure 6. The effectiveness of the treatment tends to be weakened at night. Countermeasures that increase the visibility of the RDE pavement and the supporting sign (R8-8), such as improved street illumination, highly-retroreflective pavement marking materials, and LED-en-hancement, are suggested to improve the nighttime effectiveness of the RDE treatment. The presence of right-turn channelization pavement markings, which may encourage right-turning motorists to enter the dynamic envelope areas to seek gaps in intersecting traffic at intersections with red-turn-on-red operations, tends to reduce the effects of dynamic envelope pavement markings; it is suggested to avoid right-turn channelization within dynamic envelope areas at crossings/ intersections with "turn on red" operations. Further studies are needed to examine the potential impacts of other pavement markings and traffic signs on the effectiveness of RDE pavement markings. |
