摘要: Public acceptance is still a potent factor influencing the pace of modern roundabout rollout in the United States. Agencies struggle to construct a message that will resonate with decision-makers. After a quarter century of progress, the United States has lately attained the milestone of 10,000 modern roundabouts constructed. It's notable that in the same period, Spain has constructed 35,000 modern roundabouts. Since the U.S. population is approximately seven times that of Spain, the equivalent by population for the United States would be 246,000, far more than the actual 10,000. Agencies sometimes mention the operational efficiency of proposed modern roundabout projects, but terms such as capacity, delay, LOS and v/c ratio don't resonate with the public. Usually, the benefits are couched in terms of safety, and agencies often cite specific figures from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA): a more than 90 percent reduction in intersection fatalities, a 76 percent reduction in intersection injuries, and a 35 percent reduction in crashes. These striking numbers are often repeated by the news media covering a proposed roundabout project. To phrase it differently, FHWA is saying conventional intersections have 10-times the fatality rate of modern roundabouts.
