It is important to understand the physical characteristics of the nation's truck fleet for numerous reasons. Information about the nation's truck fleet is collected in various ways by different organizations. The methodologies used and data elements collected depend on several factors, including the needs of the organization, monetary and time constraints, and the availability and limitations of technology. The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Office of Highway Policy Information funded this project as a follow-on to the Truck Fleet Characteristics study. Both projects seek to explore the scope of available sources of current information about the physical characteristics of trucks, with the goal of compiling unique data sources that will, at a minimum, assist in improving the accuracy and number of applications for data from automatic vehicle classifiers (AVC) and weigh-in-motion (WIM) devices, FHWA's primary goal for this project. / |
