摘要: Technology is the driving force of society, there is no doubt about it. And, much like every other industry across the globe, the public transport sector is continuously adapting in order to adopt the latest technological innovations, so that it can continue to offer both its passengers and its workforce the easiest and most seamless way to move and work. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly accelerated the adoption of certain types of technology across the industry, purely out of necessity - namely, contactless ticketing, for example - but there is still a continued interest that existed pre-pandemic in better utilising the powers of technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence or connectivity, in addition to many others. As the industry looks forward to the new year and beyond, no matter what plans are already in place or may lie in store, technology will be the key to all future developments. One only has to take a look at some of the industry's biggest current priorities - such as decarbonisation, or an improved passenger experience - and current projects - like introducing autonomous vehicles, or implementing Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) schemes-to realise that there is no future for public transport without technology. Within this final 2022 issue of Intelligent Transport, our authors have taken the opportunity to consider how technology is impacting public transport in a variety of different ways. And the message that can be derived from all of them is clear: if the industry hopes to thrive and encourage more people to make that vital modal shift, then now is the time for public transport to take the next big step into the world of technology and not look back.
