Why must air pollution and congestion be addressed and reduced? While COVID-19 gave us a glimpse of a cleaner future, travel restrictions were not going to be the long-term solution to clean air. Unfortunately, air pollution is one of the greatest silent killers of our time and is a serious threat to our health and the natural environment. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that nearly seven million deaths are a direct result of prolonged exposure to air pollution. It's a local, regional and global problem. Since the 1990s, our population has grown, and road traffic has increased steeply. In 2019 alone, transport accounted for more than aquarter of the country's emissions. Long-term exposure to air pollution weakens the body. Unknowingly, our insides are attacked. How can these issues be solved? Policymaking, stricter legislation and making sustainable solutions more accessible are some of the most significant things that we can do to halt the rise of air pollution. Experts believe that if legislation were tightened and aligned, it would see a considerable reduction in respiratory diseases. We have already seen the impact of traffic initiatives. According to a new study, areas such as central London have reduced N02 emissions by 44 per cent since implementing restricted vehicle interventions, such as low-emission and ultra-low-emission zones. |
