摘要: Due to a recent strategic initiative adopted by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), there is a need to determine if skid resistance testing results can be correlated to wet weather crash data in Ohio. Specifically, the results of testing conducted with both the ribbed tire and smooth tire will be investigated to determine if reliable correlations can be established. The establishment of such a correlation would allow ODOT to develop a proactive wet weather accident reduction program that would effectively predict locations where wet weather crashes may likely occur. The primary objective of this research is to determine if a reliable quantifiable measure of a pavement surface characteristic can be correlated to wet weather crashes in Ohio. The research tasks for this project consist of: (1) reviewing published literature; (2) prioritizing the most critical site categories; (3) analyzing collected field test data; (4) providing a recommended friction testing method; (5) providing recommendations for ranges of acceptable minimum friction levels; and (6) providing recommendations and guidelines for incorporating any determined statistical correlations into Ohio's wet weather crash reduction program.
