The accumulation of sediments in reservoirs continues on a world scale. The National Dam Inventory' indicates that there are 92,092 dams across the nation, with 61 years average age 15,500 "could cause fatalities if they failed." California's reservoirs accumulated an estimated 2.1 billion cubic meters of sediments through 2008. In an ideal world the sediments inflow into the reservoir would be transported around the dam to a downstream location where they will continue to replenish the river The estimated water capacity per capita in the USA is back to where it was in I960- due to continuous sedimentation of our reservoirs. |
