Although the Florida Department of Transportation has made many efforts to reduce the number, rate, and severity of traffic crashes, Florida is still one of the highest highway fatality rate states in the nation. In 2006, 3,365 persons were killed on the states streets and roads. In an effort to enhance highway safety, FDOT has been refocusing its efforts by implementing new and innovative treatments to achieve its safety objectives. An evaluation is required to determine if these innovative treatments are effective in reducing crashes and fatalities. As such, the FDOT has established the Evaluation of Innovative Safety Treatments contract for the purpose of evaluating new and innovative traffic control devices and design features. A total of six innovative safety treatments were evaluated as part of this project. |
