Two remote locomotives directly behind the derailed cars remained on the track. There were no injuries to the train crew. There was extensive damage to track, roadbed, and equipment totaling about $228,000. At the time of the accident it was daylight and clear, with a south wind about 13 mph. The temperature was 98F. The accident was caused by issues with rail anchors and ballast, coupled with high temperatures, resulting in a sun kink which caused the derailment. |
