Blowing out the tires of our previous forecast, new transaction price surveys report that average prices in trucking dropped by a surprising 0.4% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to a year earlier. That's quite a change from the record-high 25.6% inflation rate set only 11 months ago. Looking deeper, truckload prices plummeted 10.5% in the first quarter, a remarkable 40-point decline from its peak inflation rate. At the same time, LTL saw an 18-point decline as inflation here slowed to 4.1%. Also, tanker and other specialized trucking's inflation rate stood at 9.7% in the first quarter of 2023, a 12.6-point decline from year-ago peak. |
