WITH ANOTHER NEGATIVE U.S. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT(GDP) reading for the second quarter of 2022, it certainly leaves one wondering if the U.S. economy is in a recession. And while whether we're in an official recession or not remains unclear, one thing that's pretty certain is that there are all kinds of mixed signals that could certainly make the case for, or against, these being recessionary times. On one hand, the unemployment rate, at 3.5%, remains at a record-low, its lowest level going back to February 2020, not long before the pandemic kicked in. And as has been the case throughout the pandemic, consumers continue to spend, as evidenced by solid monthly retail sales data. |
