A cyclical downturn in trucking prices is a near certainty now for 2023. After peaking at 25.7% last May, average transaction prices in the industry increased 14.5% in the three months ending November compared to a year earlier. Truckload led the way with last spring's breakneck 30% inflation pace slowing to 6.5% by November. With a bit less drama, LTL prices downshifted from a 21.9% rate in July to 13.1% in the most recent price survey. Extrapolating with historical business cycle price trends as our guide, we now forecast average annual prices in the trucking inflation to increase at a slow 1.3% pace in 2023 and a moderate 4.6% rate in 2024. |
