摘要: These days, we frequently hear the word resilience discussed in the media in a variety of contexts. The textbook definition is "an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change."1 We all have our own stories about personal resilience. Like many of you, I have faced the challenge of overcoming adversity. For me, it has often been because of where I live. My first significant experience was our home flooding when I was 13 from the particularly wet Tropical Storm Claudette. It is a shocking and humbling experience to have everything you own strewn out in the backyard to dry, hoping to salvage something of real or sentimental value. I have a scrapbook with photos and clippings from my elementary school days which still show the signs of that long-receded water. My hometown was again ravaged in 2017 by Hurricane Harvey with more than 50 inches of rain and more than 80 percent of the structures damaged or destroyed. That is overwhelming for a town of only 12,000. But the community has recovered and is thriving once again.
