There are many undivided four-lane arterials across the United States, often in lower-income and largely minority communities. Safety, operations, and pedestrian service are often poor in these corridors. If the demand is low or modest, a four-lane to three-lane road diet restriping is the proven option. If demand is higher-above, say, 20,000 VPD-a road diet is typically infeasible, and widening is often perceived to be the only treatment option. However, widening is usually expensive and impactful in dense urban settings, does not treat some problems like the lack of pedestrian crossing opportunities, and is often opposed strenuously by stakeholders. |
