Linking the East Village's vibrant cultural scene to the hustle of Union Square, the historic charm of the West Village, and the trendsetting energy of the Meatpacking District, 14th Street is one of Manhattan's most vital arteries, but also long notorious for its congestion. Over the past few years, however, this thoroughfare has become known for something else: the milestone 14th Street Transit and Truck Priority Pilot Project ("14th Street Busway"). This transformative effort catalyzed a paradigmatic shift in how New York City thinks about its streets-and showcased how planners and engineers can work together to optimize major roadway redesigns. Sam Schwartz was the independent evaluator for this pilot project, assembling an interdisciplinary team of planners and engineers to develop quarterly monitoring reports that helped decision makers and the public understand the effects of the 14th Street Busway. |
