ITE JOURNAL: Your bio says you are "passionate about balancing the often-conflicting needs of mobility and safety"-can you explain more about these conflicting needs and how you see transportation professionals helping strike that balance to provide safety for all? ZHOU: When working on infrastructure projects, I see two common trends, 1) increased automobile congestion, and 2) a focus on multimodal improvements. It can be challenging to address both, with limited right of way and funding. Historically, our roads were built to prioritize automobile travel; however, there are a disproportionate number of pedestrians and bicyclists represented in fatal and severe collisions, especially along high speed arterials. As transportation professionals we need to think creatively. We can do this by considering transportation demand management strategies that discourage traveling during peak traffic conditions, exploring low-cost and low-impact countermea-sures, such as leading pedestrian intervals and accommodating pedestrian desire lines, and viewing the roadway network as a system rather than individual roadways that serve the same purpose, just to name a few. |
