Although the application of red and green pavement treatments improves the function of bus- and bike-only lanes, their use is still far from standard practice in the US and abroad. Even though efforts at standardization, spearheaded by FHWA, NACTO, and various cities, have been underway for close to two decades, it has not been universally implemented. There is more work to be done in this regard. As NACTO states, "Consistent application of color across a bikeway corridor is important to promote clear understanding for all users."3 We believe the research demonstrates this is true for bus lanes as well. Standardization and wider adoption of red bus-only lanes and green bike-only lanes will improve visibility, road-user knowledge and enforcement, and provide a safe and reliable space for transit riders and bicyclists on increasingly crowded roads. |
