摘要: The results of the research indicate that the LED-Em treatment is effective in certain conditions, including: 1. Lower volume roads 2. Lower posted speed limits 3. Narrower roads 4. Presence of supplemental traffic-control devices (such as in-street pedestrian crossing warning signs, in-roadway lights, or additional crossing warning signs) The length of time the LED-Em flashed was significant; however, at most of the sites, the length of time the LED-Em flashed was within a narrow range (between 20 and 30 s). While increasing the length of time the LED-Em flashing may be associated with higher driver yielding, that change is not expected to offset the lower driver yielding associated with higher speed, higher volumes, or longer crossing distances. The presence of bike lanes on the street was associated with higher driver yielding. The presence of a bike lane helps communicate to a driver that vulnerable road users may be present. Future research could investigate the specific street characteristics associated with communicating to drivers a pedestrian-friendly or bicyclist-friendly environment. Defining the metrics for a pedestrian- or bicyclist-friendly environment is also needed, such as driver-yielding rates or driveroperating speed.
