The collapsed section of 1-95 in Philadelphia reopened on June 23, 2023, in a rapid 24/7 rebuild project-returning traffic just 12 days after the fiery crash shut down the busy highway. Six temporary lanes-three in each direction-opened at noon on June 23 over the section that collapsed. Overall, this incident was a case-study in preparation, teamwork, identification of priorities, and cooperation. The preparedness of PennDOT and the other stakeholders enabled the efficient management of the impacts on local areas and minimized to the extent possible the logistical and economic pressures for our city, region, and nation. With the allocation of necessary resources and focus on priority issues, this incident showed the capabilities of the civil engineering profession and construction industry to quickly respond to a transportation emergency. |
