摘要: We have identified the Department of Transportations (DOT) top management challenges for fiscal year 2010. The Nations economy and the quality of life for all Americans rely heavily on a safe and vital transportation system. The Department spends about $70 billion annually on a wide range of programs and initiatives to meet this objective, and we continue to support its efforts through our audits and investigations. Improving transportation safety remains the Departments overarching goal. The Department, the Administration, and Congress continue to face significant challenges in achieving this goalchallenges that will require difficult decisions. Longstanding concerns we have identified that demand ongoing attention include relieving highway and air traffic congestion, financing the Highway Trust Fund, and addressing the Nations aging surface infrastructure. At the same time, the Department must address new OIG concerns, such as starting up an intercity highspeed rail system and ensuring that the Department has a sufficient acquisition workforce with the skills needed to oversee contracts. We have begun to build a body of work to help the Department effectively manage these and other emerging issues.
