Not too long ago, a technician needed only a test light to diagnose the electrical system. Back then, about the only components you needed "test equipment" to diagnose were starters, alternators and vehicle lights of a 12v electrical system. It wasn't long before powerful lab scopes and meters were replacing traditional test equipment. ABS, high speed CAN, airbags, ADAS and hybrid systems all changed our approach to electrical diagnosis. Specialty testing and safety equipment now fill a drawer or two in a modern technician's toolbox. Most of the enhancements being made on vehicles today are electronic, which add circuits and networking to the vehicle to make everything work. This emphasis on electrical system expansion has led to an increased focus on electrical system diagnosis as critical to repairing advanced vehicles. Even systems like air conditioning are becoming super complex. Reverse-cycle, 3-phase, variable-speed scroll compressors, which are responsible for heating and cooling the passenger compartment and maintaining the high voltage battery temperature, are just one example of a system growing in complexity. |
