I was recently asked this question by a shop owner, but like many questions about the future of our industry, it's kind of a loaded question, as there are so many particulars to discuss that make the answer very long. No longer is it just a shop with some space for collision work, a booth, a pulling system and space for parts in the back. There are so many more considerations to think through. It's easy for a technician to say, "I can open my own shop and do better." Some may be able to do it with hard work and time, but many find it's a lot of work and way more complex than it was in the past.
