In the history of automotive transportation, every innovation seems to create a new challenge. The introduction of mass produced automobiles, starting in 1913, created a need for modern highway systems. New highways and affordable cars led to explosive growth in road travel by mid-century. In 2003, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the national transit system had reached the limits of its capacity, leading to increased delays, pollution and accidents. In response to crowded roads, the transport industry has harnessed digital technology, creating ITS to move cars and people more efficiently and safely. |
