This year, due to the focus on broadband and the $43.5 billion Federal BEAD (Broadband Equity Access and Deployment) program, the fiber optic workforce became a big topic of discussion. Some said we need 200,000 or even 850,000 more fiber optic techs to cover the installations funded by BEAD. But in reality, we are still determining how many fiber optic techs we currently have and how many more are needed. FOA was contacted by a BLS analyst looking for information to help update their database on the job category. I made the case for updating the current job descriptions and statistics and presenting the case for creating a new category. Since broadband involves fiber and wireless infrastructure, a separate category for communications workers involved in fiber and wireless networks makes more sense. |
