It's amazing how much has changed with the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) since I joined more than 50 years ago. When I first attended an IMSA section meeting, the important business was held in a bar. My first IMSA convention, back when they were still called conventions, featured 23 members on the Board of Directors - one from each section. The Executive Board was nominated from the floor and voted on by the directors, and only directors could serve. The first certification schools were held in 1979 and used the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) slide deck with a cassette tape. While listing to the tape, you would hear a ping, which meant it was time to move to the next slide. IMSA has come a long way since those days. The industry has also come a long way and is still growing. The Educational Advisory Council (EAC) and many volunteers are spending several hours writing new certification programs and testing to ensure that the industry has qualified technicians to continue making travel safe. We just made it through a sweltering summer. The heat and humidity throughout the country created some hard days to do our jobs, but I appreciate all you do to make the roadways safe as possible. Heat-related illnesses are serious, and we must do all we can to keep each other and ourselves safe. |
