Ministers remain under pressure to reinstate the hard shoulder on existing smart motorways after prime minister Rishi Sunak scrapped plans for new all-lane running (ALR) smart motorway schemes. Mr Sunak pledged before he became PM to scrap the controversial format, but until last month the Government's position was that new schemes were paused until five years of safety and economic data had been analysed. Schemes not being taken forward include 11 paused schemes from the current Road Investment Strategy (RIS 2: 2020-2025) and three earmarked for construction during RIS 3 (2025-2030). Schemes on the M56 and M6 will continue as they are already over three quarters constructed. |
