So far this year, the UK has already faced record-breaking temperatures, a summer of drought and flash flooding, and economic and political crises. This is not to mention ongoing shortages of housing and the land to build it on, and the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. As we embark on the next phases of building the UK's strategic road network, the need for better and more sustainable design is greater than ever. National Highways is spearheading this monumental challenge, supported in its implementation by an army of highways developers, architects, engineers, project managers and landscapers who will be at the heart of feeding into new schemes and roads. Even though the task is great, there is cause for optimism. Legislation such as the Environment Act 2021 is already helping protect wildlife through regulated measures like Biodiversity Net Gain. |
