One thing I enjoy doing is rediscovering highway engineering designs that really should have taken off and become mainstream but somehow didn't, especially if someone has just come up with the same idea, which is hailed as innovative. I guess engineers are plagiarists and hoarders (in the nicest possible way) and this means we often lose out on great ideas that really need to be shouted about. On a recent walk around Glasgow city centre, I happened upon a footway detail that I have been obsessed with for the last few years since seeing it in the Netherlands, and one which I have been relentlessly explaining to anyone who will listen - the continuous treatment - an approach that I hope just ends up as how we routinely detail accesses and quieter side streets. |
