In February approximately 2,000 people took part in demonstrations in Oxford against low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs)... or perhaps a trial of traffic filters in the city... or perhaps the city council's '15-minute neighbourhoods' plans. Local protestors were joined by many from outside the city, including some known for campaigning against the Government's approach to COVID-19 and others with connections to the far right. This flashpoint erupted from a simmering debate in local roads. How can we tackle rising congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions from cars without frustrating residents, protective of their freedom of movement? The debate has taken on a sinister tone. |
