The regulations that will make 20mph the default urban speed limit in Wales were designed to prevent local authorities becoming bogged down in judicial review, the Welsh Government has revealed. Wales is the first UK nation to make the change, which the devolved administration said would help save lives, develop safer communities, improve quality of life and encourage more people to make more sustainable and active travel choices. The new speed limits are currently being trialled in eight communities across Wales and will be rolled out nationally in September next year. The Welsh Government said the new legislation would leave local authorities to decide which roads should remain at 30mph, rather than apply a blanket speed limit on all roads. |
