Surrey's speed reduction pilot covers 80 square miles south of a line from Guildford to Dorking. The network within this area has been reviewed and each individual route assessed, with the specific speed reduction plans on selected roads. Speaking to Highways, Surrey County Council road safety manager Duncan Knox said the new limits, which could be set at 20, 30 or 40mph, were based on the current speeds at which drivers tend to travel on those routes. 'We have measured the vehicle speeds on these roads and we are setting the limits at the speeds most drivers are currently driving at, so the new limits are credible and we expect them to be respected but they will encourage some of the faster drivers to slow down,' he said. |
