There is a palpable sense of excitement among the GW Highways (GWH)leadership team. The company is on a roll after winning a £160m term service contract with Kent County Council last year, a source of great pride, not just because the work is in their own backyard but because it took the contractor up to a new level - a regional outfit entering the Tier One game. What the firm did next puts it in a league of its own because when it comes to GWH's level of commitment to the environment even the biggest names in the business are trying to catch up. Term services director David Gibbins explains: 'GWH is working with the Carbon Trust towards achieving carbon neutrality, certified to PAS 2060, thereby taking full responsibility for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions generated by its activities. We will be absolutely carbon neutral, addressing the emissions from our entire value chain, with no residual impact on the environment, which is something none of our competitors are doing. There are lots of things people are doing on an individual project basis, which is great, but no one is taking the step across their entire business and upstream for the carbon generated in the value chain.' |
