The cost of building a link road south of Carlisle appears to have doubled in just two years as the surging price of building materials and labour starts to bite. The tender for the construction works for the Carlisle Southern Link Road was originally set at £75m in August 2020. In April 2021, Morgan Sindall was awarded a construction contract, then widely reported as valued at around£65m, to build the road for Cumbria County Council. The deal included a 12-month ECI element and a design phase worth£4.5m. The two sides parted ways this summer after being unable to agree a final deal and procurement will restart in September but the cost is now put by the council at £150m. |
