The first demonstration at this year's NCDD involved a traditional, unsafe, four metre length, 139mm diameter steel CHS post, planted at only 1000mm depth. The target vehicle, a Peugeot 107, hit the post square on at more than 50mph, folding and pulling the steel post out of its foundation. This caused significant deceleration to the vehicle, with all four wheels leaving the ground at the moment of impact. Thanks to the modern design of the car, the crumple zone at the front of the vehicle dealt well with the deformation caused, with no intrusion into the passenger area. However, the level of rapid deceleration needed to deform the vehicle in such a way would have been the cause of significant injury to the vehicle's occupants. A similar demonstration conducted in June by the Institution of Traffic Accident Investigators - a police institution - involved a similar-sized car and speed and the same post size but planted at 2000mm depth. The target vehicle struck the post off-centre, causing the vehicle to rotate first horizontally around the post and then vertically, rolling over four times. The forces involved in this collision would also have been significant enough to cause severe injuries to any vehicle occupants. |
