摘要: In July 2021, we launched our net zero plan, setting out the direction for the conning decades. We recently published our first annual update and I'm pleased that we made a promising start, although we acknowledge that we've all still got much to do. Roads are vital to national prosperity. By volume, roads account for nine out of 10 passenger miles and seven out of 10 freight miles. The 4,300-mile strategic road network is only 2% of roads by length but they connect the country, carrying a third of all car miles and two-thirds of all freight miles. Businesses that are heavily reliant on the network deliver more than £300bn to the economy. It is important that our network meets the needs of today in a way that does not compromise the needs of tomorrow. That means enhancing the natural environment on and around our network, minimising and mitigating pollution for the benefit of neighbouring communities and playing our part in the transition to a net zero carbon economy.
