We seem to be living in a very different world since the end of the summer and it's not just the weather that has turned gloomy. September started with a change of government. Prime minister Liz Truss promised to invest in roads in her maiden speech to the nation and brought in a new transport secretary to help her. Then everything stopped. Our sector, the nation and indeed the world mourned the passing of Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ. Roads authorities played their part in the enormous operation to ensure the beloved monarch was given a fitting send-off. For millions, it felt like a great loss in personal terms and because a link to the past was severed and a fixed present finally changed. |
